The Barcham Family
NEWSLETTERS
December 2007 Greetings to all ‘Barchams’ around the world. Wishing you a joyous Christmas and New Year, and peace, prosperity and good health through 2008.
We have been very pleased to hear from Maxwell Barcham in Malaysia whom we had not heard from previously. He and his wife, Vanessa, visited England in September and were pleased to meet several of their distant relations. Other family members have continued to provide information about their forebears and Chris has continued his own research to flesh out the bare bones of our genealogy.
Judith continues to maintain the Barcham Family tree which now has over 2200 names. She also updates the Barcham Family website regularly so do visit from time to time to check Family News which includes announcements, newsletters and the ‘Barcham blog’, and Family History for the latest updates. Thank you to all those who have kept us informed of births, marriages and deaths and other important events. Earlier this year we introduced a new section on occupations, starting with ‘Shopkeepers and shop assistants’ by Chris Farrow. A useful addition to the information on the Norfolk Roots page are two suggested ‘Barcham Tours’ and a list of ‘Barcham Places’ which you can download and print should you be planning a visit to Norfolk.
There are just two copies remaining of The Barchams of Edingthorpe. This is your last chance to obtain a copy of our acclaimed family history as we have no plans to publish another edition. The book and family trees will however continue to be available on CD for the foreseeable future. Payments may now be made using PayPal.
There is a surplus remaining from the Barcham Gathering of 2003 and from sales of our publications. The Organising Committee has been considering how to make best use of the money. We need to keep a reserve to meet the expenses of maintaining the website, but the question arises of what to do with the remainder. There are several suggestions: (a) make donations to Norfolk charities, (b) keep the money for a future Barcham Gathering, or (c) use the money to pay for the expenses of administering a Barcham DNA project. Trevor Rix has written some explanatory notes about DNA testing. Please let us know your views on DNA testing, and the Barcham funds, via the ‘Barcham blog’ or write to the Family Publisher.
We fondly remember those who passed away this year, including: Roy Jackson Barcham, Maisie (Hartnett) Barcham, Joan Constance (Rowberry) McVicar, Rosalie (Barcham) Hamilton, and William (Bill) Robert Waterhouse.
This year, Chris visited the Canadian National Library and Archives in Ottawa to research particulars of two members of the family, William Henry Barcham and Herbert John Dudley Barcham, who served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I. Chris also discovered more about Cyril Barcham’s training as a fighter pilot in World War II. Details of Chris’s research and other family news are in his Christmas newsletter.
